Hello Friends,
How Folashade got her first tech job in Canada 5 months before she landed in Brampton.
But she didn't get it until after months making mistakes, figuring out what worked, and learning what didn't.
If she had the chance to start over, she did do things differently. That's why I want to share a roadmap that could save you time and get you closer to your dream job in 2025.If I were starting my career journey today, here's exactly how I'd approach it.
Phase 1: Start by documenting every experience you've had so far. That online business you ran ads for? Add it. The events you organized in school or the social media community you managed? Include those too. Next, create a resume and portfolio that showcase these experiences. Don't stress over perfection; the key is showing proof of your skills. Oh, and remember: customize your resume for each role. It might feel tedious, but this single step can set you apart.
Phase 2: Position yourself intentionally. LinkedIn will be your best friend for this. Update your headline to reflect the role you want. Then start posting twice a week about your learning journey, challenges, or anything related to your target industry. It doesn't have to be perfect; just start sharing.
Phase 3: Start applying actively. Commit to applying for at least 100 roles, but don't stop there. After submitting each application, send members of that team a short introductory DM explaining why you're excited about the role and asking if they have a few minutes to have a coffee chat.
After this, email or send a message to the hiring manager. In your email/message, my friend, Ehi recommends you mention that:
you connected with [names of the team members]
what they shared that made you excited about the role/team
how you bring value to the team
showing evidence of this value/impact from your previous roles
keep it short and attach your 2-paged resume as a pdf.
You'll likely receive referrals, personal recommendations, and direct interview invitations. If these informal interviews go well, you may even receive a job offer before formally applying.
This extra step can make all the difference, trust me. We have a few 1:1 strategy sessions left in December. Whether it is getting a 9-5, monetizing your content, or building confidence in your career, we can create a personalized strategy for your situation. I know starting can feel overwhelming, so if you're craving some personalized guidance, I've got you covered.
