From May 2nd-4th, AMAKA’s first event, Our World Festival is a virtual summit featuring an impressive lineup of African women and non-binary people across the continent and in the diaspora. With a choice of yoga sessions, cooking classes, travel & lifestyle seminars, and entrepreneurship roundtables, this immersive experience is designed to get you feeling like your best self ahead of the summer!
Starting with a restorative yoga and journaling session led by Haitian-American health consultant and yoga instructor Nzingah Oniwosan, we’ll gently ease into the festival with a Self-Care Sunday - perfect for the day of rest. Shortly after is a chance to sharpen your culinary skills through learning how to make a traditional Ethiopian dish with food and culture curator Helina Tesega, founder of Eat Ethio: a movement that provides a modern understanding of the food, coffee, music, artisans, and culture of Ethiopia. Day 1 will end on a hopeful note with a how-to on travel (post-COVID of course), learning from three of the best in the game: Nigerian-American writer and travel stories podcast host Nneka Julia, Kenyan fashion journalist Silvia Njoki, Cameroonian-American digital creator Lee Litumbe, and Annette Richmond, plus size activist and travel blogger.
Next up is Motivation Monday, getting the week started off right with webinars and panels on Economic Empowerment, Tools for Working Women, Passion x Purpose: Entrepreneurship, and The Balancing Act: Entrepreneurship and Parenthood featuring Afua Osei, Marieme E. Dassanou, Anita Nderu, Oluwatosin Olaseinde, Ivy Mugo, Rabia Ghoor, Christina Okorocha, and Yvette Gayle.
Last but not least will be AMAKA Tuesday on May 4th to round up what will be an invigorating three days. Our final day will focus on the mind, body, and soul. In partnership with Youtube, we are pleased to present a panel geared towards building a career in content creation, followed by an honest exploration on navigating mental health through the advocacy and expertise of Ruthie Zerai (Eri Wellbeing), Hauwa Ojeifo (She Writes Woman), Alya Mooro (The Greater Freedom: Life as a Middle Eastern Woman Outside the Stereotypes) and more. Topping off this wellness deep dive is an inclusive sex education from experts Nour Emam, Penda N’diaye, Oloni, and Kaz Lucas!
