Mental health struggles can make self-love feel impossible. When the mind is filled with doubt, exhaustion, or just a heavy fog that won’t lift, being kind to yourself might be the last thing on your mind. But here’s the truth—self-love isn’t about having it all together. It’s about giving yourself grace, even when things feel messy.
Why Is Self-Love So Hard
When anxiety, depression, or stress take over, it’s easy to be your own worst critic. Thoughts spiral, energy fades, and suddenly, just getting through the day feels like a battle. Society pushes the idea that people should “stay positive” or “just push through,” but that only adds pressure. Some days, survival is enough.
Self-love isn’t about forcing happiness. It’s about accepting where you are and reminding yourself that struggling doesn’t mean failing.
How to Show Up for Yourself, Even on the Hard Days
1. Catch the Negative Thoughts – That little voice saying, “You’re not enough”? Challenge it. Would you say that to a friend? No? Then don’t say it to yourself. Don't be hard on yourself over situations beyond your control.
2. Set Boundaries Without Feeling Bad – Saying no, canceling plans, or taking a break isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. Protect your peace. Let those who want to take offence, do so. You are responsible for yourself, not them.
3. Celebrate the Small Wins – Got out of bed? Ate something? Sent that text you’ve been avoiding? Those things count. Give yourself credit. It may seem simple but the effort behind it should be celebrated.
4. Find Your Safe Spaces – Whether it’s a friend, a journal, or just sitting outside in the fresh air, create moments where you can just be. This man seem hard but it isn't. Take a stroll, deep your toes on sand or just watch birds fly.
5. Let Yourself Rest – You don’t have to “earn” rest. You deserve to recharge, even if all you did today was exist. Doing a 24 hour shift of living is enough to make someone tired, so it is impertinent that you pause and recharge
You’re Doing Better Than You Think
Self-love isn’t about perfection. It’s about showing yourself patience, even when your mind is working against you. Bad days don’t erase your worth, and struggling doesn’t make you weak. Keep going—one small act of kindness toward yourself at a time. If you give others in ten folds, hundred folds should come to you.
