Nigerian women in the entertainment industry and beyond have taken to Instagram to discuss the discrimination they’ve faced in Nigeria, using the hashtag #NobodyLikeWoman.
The singer’s post features a black and white image of a woman holding a child, with the writing, “How can she ask for that kind of money is she not pregnant?” on her back in capital letters.
The post makes reference to the discrimination Nigerian women experience in the workplace due to their reproductive system, in which they’re determined economic liabilities in the eyes of employers.
For instance, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) requires female applicants to be unmarried at the time of employment and remain so for at least another two years to mitigate the chance of pregnancy and a proceeding maternity leave payout.
Other celebrities, like actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington and model Efe Irele, have also used the hashtag to add to the debate.
Etomi-Wellington shared a post reading: “Is she pregnant yet?”
Irele’s Instagram upload on the topic reads: “We are filming all night. Not like you have husband and children waiting.”
Women outside of the public eye have also joined in, showcasing the widespread nature of misogyny in Nigeria.
One participant includes a business owner of a children’s interior design company, who runs the page @kidsdecornaija on Instagram.
Her post quotes several discriminatory remarks, including “As small as u are, you are the owner of this company?”
There are currently over 12,000 posts with the hashtag on Instagram at the time of publishing.
