Creating Your Personal Style
'Everyone has style' says the famous Molly Bingaman, and i totally agree with her. Style is not an outfit, or a designer bag or clothing, its how you show up in the world as your true and authentic self, and whilst this might sound cliche, there is no other way to say it.
As human beings one of our deepest desires is to be seen, and to be seen you have to show up. The starting point of style is expressing how you already move and are in this world, but just through clothing.
If you are like me and you're asking where do i begin and how do i make progress in improving my personal style? here are 4 things to consider
1. WHAT IS MY RYTHM?
There are 4 major types of movement that i have observed and it is similar to an Ochestra;
@ THE WIND SECTION: People who fit into this rhythm are very vibrant in their personality, they enjoy varieties and love changing and moving things up. People like this usually tend to bright colors, bold patterns and more exaggerated structures. They enjoy a lot of movement in their styling i.e from liking ruffles,pleats to layering of clothing and accessories
@ THE STRING SECTION: people who fit into this rhythm like movement and changes and maybe even exaggerated silhouettes, but not as much or as loudly as people in the wind section. people here would usually stick with more neutral colors, pastels and less exaggerated volumes. They enjoy a good fit for every occasion. And thiss where i actually fit in.
@ THE BRASS SECTION: People who fit into this rhythm are those who choose comfort for styling. they would usually enjoy more slouchy and less fitting silhouettes, less colors or patterns, they would usually buy 10 black shirts and many hoodies. They are the ones with the most comfortable clothing. They have a slow but direct movement in their styling and would only change when convinced
@ THE PERCUSSION SECTION: Here, there is no movement at all. people here do not enjoy voluminous silhouettes, or vibrant colors or movement at all. they enjoy close fitting outfits with less exaggeration. they would usually love the darker side of colors, shorter clothing, more fitted clothing and less movement.
PS: a person may fit into 1 or more rhythms, learning to find the balance is one of the many beauties of fashion styling
2. WHERE DO I BEGIN?
From your understanding of where you fit in rhythm wise, you can then begin to appropriately invest in the right choice of clothing. Irrespective of which rhythm you flow with, never be afraid to explore other textures, volumes and colors outside your comfort zone. For instance if you fit into the wind section, you want to get more bright colored blazers, pants printed maxi skirts and exaggerated chiffon tops. This provides the needed volume, vibrancy and movement. You can then go ahead to create a mood board for your self, to arrange what kind of structure and colors you want to invest in, or you can hire me a as your personal stylist to help you build up a capsule wardrobe collection for you.
3 DO I NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO BEGIN?
Well the answer is YES and NO. Let me explain.
Yes of course building a wardrobe that expresses your personal style will cost you, but this depends on what pieces you want to get. For instance i can decide to either get a denim jacket from Shein or get a denim jacket from Louis Vuitton, which would obviously cost more. Getting high end branded items will cost more, but you can always work with brands that fit into your budget.
4. ACCESSORIES, ACCESSORIES
Accessories is like the icing on the cake. It gives your look the perfect finishing touch and elevates your look no matter what you are wearing or what style rhythm you flow in. Investing in quality gold or silver necklaces, earrings, bracelets and wristwatches is always a good investment
