An internship is an avenue to get a work experience especially as a student. It affords a person those opportunities that an employee would equally have. The importance of internships especially in light of today’s competitive labour market cannot be overlooked. It is therefore advisable for a student to Undertake numerous internships while in school.
I am Olatunji Eniola Sultan, a 400 level law student of the prestigious University of IBADAN. As a law student who intends to specialize in the entertainment industry upon graduation, I believe this internship with Sony Music West Africa is quite important in achieving my dream.
I dream of establishing the biggest music marketing agency in the world. I want to be able to take in billions from a song as simple as a lullaby. I view music as a universal language heard all over the world. Thus, with every listen comes a payment which converts to money. Music is a unique asset that can fetch you billions across a hundred years. Till now, there are songs still generating money massively despite being released decades ago. Why? It is not necessarily because the music is good but because the marketing is exceptional. I want to be at the helm of that marketing.
Being an avid lover of music, I have always wondered why some good music do not “blow”. The lyrics are beautiful, the beat is well arranged and the vocals are enticing, but the song still has low streams. Over time, I discovered that a lot of factors contribute to this but one major factor is poor marketing. Upon this discovery, ever since then, I aspired to become the greatest music marketer that will ensure the world is not deprived of good music.
A dream not backed up by action will forever remain a dream, a fantasy that will never see the light of day. It will remain an unrealized goal that will not manifest. Therefore, in order to bring my dream to reality, I have diligently taken calculated steps in this regard.
First and foremost, I have taken numerous music courses to gain extensive knowledge about music marketing and the music business. I intentionally chose these courses because they were taught by music professionals. It is important to note that some of these courses were paid courses but I was undeterred. The music courses I have taken include amongst others: Engage Nigeria Music Business Course, Lawlexis Sports and Entertainment Law Course, Trace Academia Music Course and TomTom Breathe Academy Course on Entertainment Law.
In addition, I possess extensive internship experiences across numerous fields. I have undertaken three solid internships at a non-governmental organization, a prominent commercial bank and a reputable law firm. My first internship was at a non-governmental organization where I learned good administrative skills that have helped me ever since. It started as a physical internship which metamorphosed to a remote one upon resumption at school. While in school, I concurrently interned with this organization and I still met deadlines as required.
My second internship was at the head office of a prominent commercial bank in Marina, Lagos. This internship honed my legal and finance skills. Importantly, it further sharpened my teamwork ability and improved my sense of working in a strict formal setting.
My third internship was at a reputable law firm where I was taught sports and music law. This internship was Ina remote format and I still participated excellently. I have certificates to attest to this and the aforementioned internships also. During this internship, numerous celebrities in the Nigerian entertainment industry were brought to enlighten the students about the practicality of entertainment business and I was astonished. This gave me more incentive to pursue my dream of creating the biggest music marketing agency globally.
Education-wise, I have always structured my academic activities in line with my goal. For instance, I chose a course titled, “Intellectual Property Law” this session, as an elective in school. This course has taught me the intricacies of intellectual property (IP). You would agree with me that intellectual property is arguably the backbone of the music business and entertainment industry as a whole. You can make a million from marketing a song and lose a billion for infringing an IP right. Knowledge of IP is quite instrumental. Thus, I took this course seriously and got a distinction in it.
I went the extra mile to join the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Club, University of Ibadan, to further learn about IP. This club delved into the day-to-day application of intellectual property across all entertainment sectors.
It would interest you to know that I possess an excellent skillset that will prove useful for Sony Music West Africa in terms of content writing and researching. I have served in leadership positions and know how to relate with people to get effective results.
I would sincerely appreciate it if Sony Music West Africa grants me this internship opportunity because it is instrumental towards achieving my dream. Kindly find attached my CV in this Google Drive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1QPIKzGu7o9f-aTLlvTgsod6nsWga9OHL/view?usp=drivesdk
