October is Africa’s unofficial fashion month, with fashion events presenting designers from the continent and across the diaspora. From South Africa to Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia and all the way to the UK, African fashion weeks are getting bigger and better. One of the big events that kicked off this season is Africa Fashion Week London, the annual UK-based showcase dedicated to supporting African and Africa-inspired designers from around the world.
Ade Bakare
Based in London with branches in Lagos and Abuja, Ade Bakare Couture is not a newcomer in the fashion industry. The eponymous brand, which produces various lines including couture, bridal, millinery, and fragrances, was established in 1991 by Ade Bakare. Using materials such as Adire, an indegenoius indigo-dyed cloth from South-Western Nigeria, Bakare combines African and European influences with his cosmopolitan upbringing to craft modern and practical garments that are sophisticated.
