The Calgary Black Film Festival 2024 took place from May 25th to May 28th as part of the Fabienne Colas initiative to promote Black filmmakers and creatives in Canada. This edition did not disappoint, offering an impressive lineup of over 40 films. I spent my weekend being a part of the Calgary Black Film Festival 2024 team. The atmosphere was electric, with filmmakers and creatives alike buzzing with excitement throughout the festival.
Among the festival’s many highlights were the insightful panels and workshops, which provided me with valuable perspectives on the challenges and victories that exist in the film industry, especially for minorities. These forums gave aspiring filmmakers a rare chance to learn from many of the industry's influential figures.
Overall, the 2024 Calgary Black Film Festival was a resounding success, showcasing a rich tapestry of stories and voices from BIPOC filmmakers. Its beautifully curated selection and lively atmosphere made it a must-see event that I look forward to attending in the years to come!
One of my most memorable experiences was being able to watch the Fabienne Colas Foundation's "Being Black in Canada" series. Witnessing emerging filmmakers create these short documentaries was so impactful and inspiring. The excitement at the Globe Theatre as the lights dimmed lit a fire in me to create and return to my roots of filmmaking and my desire to tell important stories.
