Yesterday I was on a radio show called Perspective with Didam 'TheVoice' Laah and his guest Habiba suleiman.
The topic was Youth Participation in Governance and Leadership and Nation building.
Before we started the show Didam 'TheVoice' Laah introduced me as an influencer and this is a word regardless of its negative connotation, this is a word I haven’t used to describe myself because I don’t think I have gotten to that place of truly guiding people and influencing their decisions.
This conversation made me ask questions like:
1. Are you a leader if you can’t visibly note the people you are leading or if there’s no clear evidence of the change you are making? It is like a Lawyer having no court case to back up his career.
2. Are you an influencer if you can’t point to the lives you have transformed and the change you are making in the world?
3. What have you influenced as an influencer or a Leader?
I dodged the labels of Leader or Influencer because I believe there’s more work to do aside from speaking up about the social problems that plague our world, the leadership in it is to go the extra mile to do something that effectively drives your ideas into reality.
To someone who had followed me on my radio programs and social media platforms, I might have been a source of influence. I hope in years to come that I drive more change and have quantifiable evidence to be bold enough to say I challenged the status quo of a certain narrative. I made this happen; therefore, I am a Leader.
Let me give a quick shoutout to the leaders that inspire me, Chioma Chinyere Chukwuemeka your resilience and promptness to drive change consistently amazes me and Jacqueline Amen Adebija for always sharing your energy and story to seeing that young women have something to hold on to as they are climbing the ladder to success.
The both of you motivate me greatly.
P.S: My thoughts could change in the coming years of who a Leader is or what makes a Leader worthy of being a Leader.
Tell me in the comments what are your thoughts on What makes someone worthy to be called a leader.
