RubyGold is gearing up to release her latest EP, titled Mix Masala, in 2025. The name of the project is inspired by her Griqua and Portuguese heritage, which she hopes will shine through in her next body of work.
To build anticipation for the release, she has chosen to give the world two new songs: Filha da Lolita and Burning Fire. Both songs strongly convey themes of strength, resilience, and self-discovery—messages that RubyGold is passionate about sharing, as she believes the world needs more of them.
Filha da Lolita explores the importance of honoring legacy and embracing identity. The song is a tribute to her late mother, Aurora Lolita Mendoza, and her grandmother. When translated from Portuguese to English, the title means "Lolita’s Child." The song reflects the healing process RubyGold underwent after the sudden death of her mother.
At the age of six, RubyGold lost her mother to domestic violence—an epidemic in South Africa. More than just a song, Filha da Lolita is a celebration of the strength passed down to her from her mother. As someone who stands in solidarity with many women who have experienced gender-based violence, she hopes this song will provide comfort to others as they navigate their own healing processes. “This song is my way of reclaiming my roots and affirming that my mother’s legacy lives on within me, grounding me as I navigate life’s challenges,” she shares.
We then discuss her next release, Burning Fire. “This song celebrates the fire within us all. It’s about embracing challenges as opportunities to become the best version of ourselves. Burning Fire is a reminder that we each have the power to ignite our potential,” RubyGold expresses.
Burning Fire features contributions from PureVibe, WorldWide Studios, and Steven Step, who help amplify the song’s empowering message. The track can be likened to a phoenix rising from the ashes, with its electrifying energy and inspiring lyrics. It serves as an open invitation for listeners to overcome life’s challenges. Ultimately, Burning Fire is a journey of self-discovery and transformation, encouraging listeners to view setbacks as catalysts for growth.
As we delve into the details of the EP, RubyGold shares that sonically, it will be Amapiano-inspired. The world will be taken on a journey of cultural fusion, blending her father’s Griqua heritage with her late mother’s Mozambican Portuguese influence.
As she prepares to release Mix Masala, RubyGold hopes that these two singles will help her fans and the wider world find comfort in difficult times while also reminding them of their strength to overcome whatever challenges life may throw their way.
