Dato Seiko returns with her latest single, titled Sahasrara, released on November 1, 2024. This release marks her most expressive song to date, telling a story of healing and spiritual awakening.
Dato considers herself a multi-faceted artist—not only a great vocalist but also a talented visual artist. Being signed to Warner Music has allowed her to develop each skill while maintaining her creative integrity.
With a degree in Live Performance from AFDA, she began her career like many legendary performers: making her debut performance during her formative years in a family of talented singers. She began singing from the forefront, where her unique and enchanting voice was always easy to recognize.
After releasing her debut EP, Grace Effect, in 2021, Dato aims to build on the success and momentum of that project by releasing more music. Sahasrara is the first step in this direction, as she becomes more vulnerable and transparent with herself, her music, and her audience—a journey she’s excited to embark on.
Reflecting on her latest single, Dato shared the song's meaning: “Even in my hurt, I remain gracious. I don’t wish I'll on anyone, regardless of how much they’ve hurt me, because I truly believe in karma in all her shapes and forms.” The name Sahasrara is inspired by the Sanskrit word for the crown chakra, and the song explores the delicate journey from deep friendship to distant strangers. However, as Dato explains, she refuses to let pain transform into bitterness.
“Sahasrara” is named after the chakra that connects the soul to higher realms of consciousness. For Dato, it’s a personal anthem of grace in the face of adversity. In her own words, she describes the track as a “soft diss track”—a tender expression of her pain that never strays from the principle of karma.
The song unpacks the experience of living with unresolved emotions, confronting the reality that only time can heal all wounds. Dato carefully navigates the uncertainty of relationships through emotional lyricism, asking, “Was I catastrophizing the situation, or just gaslighting myself into letting unsettling feelings slide for the sake of love?” Every line reveals a moment of vulnerability, capturing the artist’s emotional truth.
Backing vocals provided by Sandi Ncube elevate the raw emotion of Sahasrara, adding extra depth and texture to an already immersive soundscape. The melodic layers blend seamlessly with Dato Seiko’s signature style, creating a track that “feels and sounds like healing.”
To conclude, Dato shares about the creative process of writing the song: “Writing Sahasrara was painful but necessary. I relived memories I’d buried, wondering about all the ‘what-ifs’ and questioning if I was too soft for this world. But by the end, I knew this was my favorite song—it felt like a journey through pain and into peace.”
