Since 1959, Barbie has aimed to inspire generations of women, championing empowerment, imagination, and limitless possibilities. On October 25, 2024, a special book launch was held to celebrate the brand’s 65th anniversary. Mattel announced the release of a special-edition book, My Barbie Story, featuring heartfelt narratives from inspiring friends of the brand – focusing on what Barbie means to them. This collection of 108 unique stories and photos from well-known personalities, fans, and collectors is now available for purchase. All proceeds will support UN Women UK as part of the Barbie Dream Gap Project’s mission to create equal opportunities for girls.
The idea behind the book launch was to showcase the impact Barbie has made as a brand. From early childhood memories to moments of self-discovery, Barbie has shaped countless lives. To honor this legacy, My Barbie Story invited people from around the world to reflect and share their own Barbie stories – continuing Barbie’s inspiring vision.
Personal stories from celebrities like Kim Jayde, fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee, change activist Kovini Moodley, and jewelry designer Jenna Clifford were shared. Each contributor recounted how Barbie influenced their lives both personally and professionally, further cementing Barbie’s legacy as a global icon over the past 65 years.
The launch, held in Sandton, Johannesburg, featured heartfelt words from Gert-Johan Coetzee, who expressed gratitude for Barbie’s commitment to empowering women of all ages. “Barbie has always been more than just a doll; she’s a symbol of empowerment and limitless potential. Growing up, I found inspiration in Barbie's boldness and her ability to reinvent herself. Being featured in this book is an incredible honor; it reflects how Barbie has influenced not only my career but also encouraged countless others to pursue their dreams fearlessly.”
Kim Jayde, also in attendance, shared the impact Barbie had on her life growing up in Zimbabwe. “I am so truly humbled to be part of such an impactful and important project. Representation matters, and to be chosen to represent my family, Zimbabwe, South Africa, and African women means the world! Thank you, Barbie, and congratulations on 65 years of inspiring children worldwide to dream! Anything is possible,” she shared with heartfelt enthusiasm.
Krista Berger, Senior Vice President of Barbie and Global Head of Dolls at Mattel, highlighted the significance of Barbie’s 65th anniversary. "As we celebrate 65 years of Barbie, My Barbie Story honors the dreams and endless possibilities Barbie has inspired across generations. This collection of personal reflections highlights the unique bond people share with Barbie—a symbol of self-expression and a reminder that you can be anything. With proceeds supporting UN Women UK, we continue our mission to empower girls everywhere to believe in their limitless potential. We invite you to share your own Barbie story and join us in celebrating her enduring legacy.”
While Barbie has achieved much over the past 65 years, the brand acknowledges there is still more work to be done. As part of the Barbie Dream Gap Project, all proceeds from this book will be donated to UN Women UK, a dedicated advocate for gender equality and women's empowerment. The Mattel Children’s Foundation will also contribute to this donation. The Barbie Dream Gap Project represents the brand’s global mission to help close the gaps that hold girls back from reaching their full potential.
Toward the end of the event, Gert-Johan Coetzee shared a personal story about Barbie’s impact. “Barbie wasn’t just a toy in my childhood; she was the silent companion to my dreams, a conduit through which I discovered the beauty of self-expression. Growing up in the vibrant landscape of South Africa, she became my canvas, each ensemble a testament to the boundless imagination she inspired within me. Throughout my childhood, I had a special routine: I would fashion her elaborate gowns from delicate flowers and tissue paper, whisking me away into a world where creativity knew no bounds. In the heart of our garden, amidst fragrant blooms and dappled sunlight, I meticulously crafted intricate designs that mirrored the dreams swirling in my mind."As the years passed, my passion for fashion blossomed, fueled by the memories of those tender moments with Barbie. I embarked on a journey to turn childhood fantasies into tangible achievements, facing adversity with unwavering determination. Today, as my designs grace runways worldwide, I am reminded of the debt of gratitude I owe to Barbie. She was more than an inspiration; she was a muse, a guiding light through life’s twists and turns. In every Barbie creation, I pay homage to her enduring legacy, a reminder of the resilience and strength within us all. She taught me to embrace my uniqueness, believe in my dreams, and never shy away from boundless potential. As I share my passion for Barbie with the world, I carry her spirit, a testament to the transformative power of imagination and the enduring legacy of childhood dreams. From playtime fantasies to runway realities, Barbie remains my steadfast companion, forever woven into the fabric of my existence.”
