When order is dismissed, chaos remains.
With people, we have those of good nature and those of ill; not that the ill outnumber the good, but their actions surmount those of the good.
Faster than we could blink an eye, the internet has settled comfortably into the palms of society. Before the next blink, the next wave of information is already storming in. It feels like every day the well of technology keeps overflowing with new apps and software left and right.
Like a blind man with his stick, we have become glued to our lives online, but who can blame us? I doubt any generation would be able to resist the lust that is the web.
But the question remains: how then do we control our behavior in this new world?
The vast nature of the internet has made it difficult for most to keep up. With new technology, we are spoiled with new ways of doing things, but still, there exist an array of underworlds where ill acts are crafted.
From the smoke of the ill, we have cyberbullying. The new way is to have fun at the expense of just about anyone, then tell them, "It's not that deep, bro." People direct hideous words and acts towards others in the system.
One doesn't have to look too far to find when protests against censorship of language and advocacy for free speech were major societal issues. If we have a society that has within its power the ability to censor the voice of those it doesn't want heard, then we have a problem, but what has become isn't what was asked.
The right to speak as one pleases is a power, and like all power, if used irresponsibly, it could hurt and damage those in society.
The same manner in which we conduct ourselves with people face-to-face is the way we ought to act with them online.
The indirect anonymity one has online provides a sense of invincibility, which makes them not recognize the hurt one could cause. When we don't see the face of those we talk ill to, then it's easy for us to lose sight of their humanity.
Forget regulating social media; we have to regulate ourselves. While a comment could get a laugh from thousands at the expense of one, the hurt that one person feels may last longer—so much so—than any joy you might acquire from the laugh.
Whether or not there exist regulation of behaviors in the media, we might have to be the ones taking responsibility to ensure that things are done in a humane manner.
Watching our actions and words and those of others.
