#SonyxAMAKA
I come from a place where dreams are nothing but pipes of hope and fantasy, the kind where is filled with so many individuals with the grandest potentials in every corner but not enough exposure to hone their skills. Home to one of the biggest female Pop stars from Africa, safe haven for a hundred thousand other victims of their own reality. I am grateful that I found music and loved it enough to immerse myself in its entirety from a young age. This passion led me to study the journeys of the greats who have shaped African pop culture, like Davido. It also fueled my interest in the evolution of Hip-Hop and Afrobeats, evident in the podcasts I listen to and interviews I consume. And I would've definitely not been aware of this opportunity of a lifetime to work as Marketing Intern at Sony Music, one of the world’s largest music companies.
Exposure is crucial in today’s world. You cannot build great things without being surrounded by great people. This is why I chose this journey of learning.
Music is my chance at finding my tribe. Just the shared idea that we have similar tastes in music, I have made friends who have become an integral part of growth in life, my interest in pop culture has allowed me access to people I never imagined I’d be in the same room with, and by having conversations around music with strangers I have gained acquaintances that have now become partners. This self-education gave me a keen understanding of music trends, audience demographics, and the ever-evolving digital landscape.
To translate this knowledge into action, I volunteered to intern with an A&R Executive with solid experience in media and marketing at the time who now leads the A&R and Artist development efforts for AWAL in West Africa. This experience helped to create the groundwork for my career in the music ecosystem, with him, we built a community that spotlights underground artists in Lagos, Nigeria through performance events and social media contents. I led the social media campaign and managed the community to grow from 18 to over 700 followers across all platforms in less than one year while increasing our engagements by over 1000%, and also assisted the management of over 9 editions of our live music performance events. This volunteer experience taught me how to create social media contents, read metrics and analytics, organise events and also communicate with people on a professional and personal level. My incredible work rate and commitment to this experience has helped me to create marketing campaigns for different emerging artists I have worked with. 2 Months ago, I became the Road Manager for one of the fastest rising female acts in Africa, Kold AF, supporting her wellbeing and performance needs throughout her touring experience.
My passion for music, coupled with my acquired skills, fuels a specific career aspiration within the marketing department. I'm particularly interested in Social media campaigns and Artist Branding.
Central to Sony Music’s marketing approach is its robust brand identity. The company has established a reputation for providing high-quality. The idea of crafting compelling narratives, building targeted campaigns, and ultimately connecting artists like Tems with their audiences on a deeper level truly excites me.
Sony Music WA's reputation for fostering artistic talent and innovative marketing strategies perfectly aligns with my goals. The opportunity to learn from industry leaders and contribute to the success of diverse artists is a dream come true. My creativity, coupled with my hunger to learn and relentless work ethic, makes me a perfect fit for this internship.
This fully-funded program offers the perfect platform for me to bridge the gap between theory and practice. The chance to gain hands-on experience in the dynamic world of music marketing at Sony Music WA is invaluable. I am confident that my skills and dedication will contribute meaningfully to the team, while the internship itself will be a springboard towards a fulfilling career in the music industry.
