With a total of five nominations, “Wakanda Forever”, the sequel to 2018’s “Black Panther", slightly trails behind its predecessor's seven nominations. It also did not receive the nomination for Best Picture. However, the latest Ryan Coogler-directed flick didn't fall short of offering history-defining moments to the ceremony.
Nigerian singer Tems earned her first Oscar nomination in the Best Original Song category alongside Rihanna for her contributions to "Lift Me Up", the lead single off the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” soundtrack.
Angela Basset's performance as Queen Ramonda granted Marvel Studios its first-ever Oscar nomination in the form of Best Supporting Actress.
Ruth E. Carter, the first Black woman to win an Oscar for Best Costume design for her work in 2018's “Black Panther”, returns with another nod in the same category. Other nominations for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" include: Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup & Hairstyling.
For the cast of “Women King” came a handful of snubs as the film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood was completely shut out of the Oscars. Viola Davis received no nomination nor did Prince-Bythewood, and the costume and production design departments.
Keke Palmer's performance in the Jordan Peele-directed “Nope” also received no nomination.
Regardless, the 2023 edition of The Oscars promises to be an interesting one to watch. The main ceremony will be held on March 12 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles.
