I have always enjoyed reading at my own pace. I am soo selective with the books I read, which has led me to picking books that will help me learn, unlearn and relearn vitalities. After careful consideration, I knew I wanted to share these set with my audience. Here you go;
1. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The novel explores race, racism, cultural criticism, identity, corruption, love and so much more. It tells the story of two teenagers who fall in love while their country is under a strict military dictatorship. Circumstances separates them and they have to fight to reunite. Find out the battles they fight, amidst all other things..
2. Honey Butter Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi speaks on faith, family, queerness, loneliness, friendship etc. Kambirinachi, after fighting for so long to live, finally lives. This angers her spirit world family; they swore to take back from her all she holds dear. She loses her father and goes on to live with her aunty. Life seems to go on smoothly: she gets married, bore adorable twins . Suddenly tragedy strucks.. Taiye and Kehinde become distant, no matter how much Taiye tries to solve the issue- Kehinde keeps pushing her away. There are endless love letters, the twins trying to discover their identities and Kambirinachi unable to help her sick self. An emotionally written story that delves into the hearts of the readers.
3. Weep not Child- Ngugi Wa Thiongo.
Njoroge wants to become educated like the son of the rich farmer Jacobo. Kenya is overthrown by its colonizers alongside some traitors. The citizens are turned into slaves in their home country, denied ownership of their acres of land. A strike commence. Jomo Kenyatta returned home from Britain in 1946 and became the President of the newly formed Kenya African Union.
A story on division and conquest, violence and revenge, hope, progress and disillusionment, pride, honour, shame..
4. The Joys of Motherhood- Buchi Emecheta. The Joys of Motherhood is a gripping story of Nnu Ego, a Nigerian mother in West Africa ,who is devoted to giving her all to her children and in the process becomes friendless. Did she reap all the labour, and love showered on her children? The Joys of Motherhood focuses on the total valuation of women for childbearing, disappointment, the agony of motherhood, patriarchy, polygamy, the danger of resisting change.
5. Adventures of Sherlock Holmes- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. You are in for a huge ride of crime stories told in an intriguing style. It's a collection of 12 stories. It explores justice, social class, deception, the supremacy of logic and reason used to explain unusual or mysterious circumstances. I am in awe of the way Sherlock Holmes uses covert communication to reveal hidden secrets.
Never underestimate the power of reason and logic.
On the whole, these novels discusses important societal issues while proffering solutions. Note: The Joys of Motherhood, Weep not Child, Americanah and Adventures of Sherlock Holmes are classics. In Literature we say classics have "Universality and Permanence". Wishing you a successful ride as you journey through.
