This is usually because of the “unattainable fantasy” that these genre of books offer. “Is there a man who would never act like this? Yes — the one in my favorite novel. He’s always supportive. He’s a good listener. He’s loyal. And he prioritizes his partner’s pleasure. So, instead of searching for the next fish in the sea, it’s easier for me to stick with a paperback partner. With romance novels, I get to experience all the best parts of a relationship without any of the heartbreak.”  Just like Alexis said, I prefer my book boyfriends over the real life men.

Why is this the case though? Anyone who has ever dated knows that the dating streets are cold, so why spend another second in them when you can get lost in a sweet romance story even if the warm feelings you experience only last for a few hours, it is better than being asked what your body count is for the millionth time. So although the romance in these stories is “unattainable”, it does bring a level of comfort even when you know that would probably not happen in real life but you know that book boyfriends would not disappoint you because they are written by women.

The phrase “men written by women” is very popular in our online book communities as it used to define or describe “a character who possesses traits women tend to value. This can include charm and charisma, thoughtfulness and generosity, and a certain type of humor. Essentially, men written by women are not the products of the patriarchy women have been taught to expect.” Now, how many times have you wished that book boyfriends were real? I know, I know, me too.
