Book Review : The Girl with The Louding Voice by Abi Daré.
With the obvious themes of child marriages, poverty, grief and abuse, a running theme that caught my attention while reading ‘Abi Daré’s The Girl with the Louding Voice’ was the keeping of promises, whether it was Adunni’s father not keeping the promise he made to his wife, Adunni’s mother or Iya, making sure she pays back Adunni’s mother’s kindness by helping Adunni in her time of need, returning the favour. There is one important promise that makes it alive throughout the book and that is Adunni’s promise to herself. The promise that she will be educated.
Although she is in close proximity to the city where her dreams can be finally realised, she believed this too, but that was quickly shattered when she realises, “Housemaid?, is this what I will be doing?”, and with the majority of the later scenes in the book taking place in Lagos, Nigeria where Adunni can almost taste her dreams but is met with obstacles after one another but this does not deter Adunni.
