Renowned tech entrepreneur and the founder of ChatGPT, Sam Altman, visited Lagos, Nigeria, to explore the country's burgeoning innovation landscape. Altman's visit on Friday, May 19, comes as Nigeria's tech ecosystem continues to gain global recognition for its remarkable growth and potential.
During his stay, the Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI and former president of Y Combinator engaged with various Nigerian entrepreneurs, start-ups, and government officials to understand the unique challenges and opportunities within the nation's tech industry. He also spoke with students at the MUSON Center in Lagos on the future of artificial intelligence.
Altman plans to visit 17 locations worldwide, including Toronto, New Delhi, Tel Aviv, Madrid, Brussels and Singapore, with Lagos as the only African city as part of his OpenAI tour.
He also held insightful discussions and shared his expertise on nurturing start-up ecosystems, fostering innovation, and leveraging technology for global economic development.
Altman visited several prominent tech hubs in Lagos, such as the Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB) and the iDEA Hub, where he interacted with enthusiastic young entrepreneurs working on diverse projects ranging from fintech and agri-tech to health-tech and e-commerce.
Impressed by the innovative solutions developed in the country and the determination of young Nigerian entrepreneurs to tackle local and global challenges, Altman expressed his optimism about Nigeria's future.
He recognized Nigeria's teeming potential as a significant player in the global tech arena while emphasizing the need for increased investment, mentorship, and policy support to fuel Nigeria's tech revolution further and create an environment conducive to entrepreneurial success.
In addition, the tech guru met with government officials, including representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, to discuss policies that could promote technological innovation and attract foreign investments.
His discussions with Nigerian government officials centered on infrastructure development, regulatory frameworks, and initiatives to foster collaboration between the public and private sectors.
Altman's visit to Nigeria highlights the country's emergence as a hub for tech innovation in Africa. It also provides a valuable opportunity for Nigerian entrepreneurs to learn from his experiences and insights and a chance for Altman to witness firsthand the immense talent and potential within Nigeria's tech ecosystem.
